Health tips

 

As a traveler, you must know in advance the health risks inherent in your trip and vaccine recommendations. In Colombia, due to its geographical location, the most frequent conditions are Acute Mountain Sickness (MAM), stomach problems, malaria and yellow fever in some forest areas.

 

Vaccines
Vaccines depend on the characteristics of the traveler and the chosen destination. Among the first to be considered: age, sex, previous vaccinations, past illnesses, current health status, allergies to vaccines or any of its components, medication that can interfere with vaccine response, pregnancy and immunodeficiency.

 

To travel to certain regions of the country are required to have been vaccinated against yellow fever at least 15 days prior to departure. The eastern plains, the Amazon, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the entire Atlantic Coast: this vaccine to shift into the departments of La Guajira, Norte de Santander, Putumayo and regions, such as recommended.

If you plan to visit national parks or wilderness areas, further vaccine against yellow fever is recommended, to have a tetanus shot. Vaccines for hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, MMR and diphtheria-tetanus are also recommended.

Health insurance and travel

Foreign travelers who wish to visit Colombia for short or extended periods should adquierir travel insurance coverage that provides medical care and emergency hospital care.

Drugstores and purchase of medicines

At drugstores and pharmacies are available most medicines without any restrictions except those that require a prescription. Before acquiring the drug, you should verify that the packaging of medicine carry printed expiration date and price. There are drugstores that provide the service in the evening hours, weekends and holidays.

Water consumption

The capital cities have excellent water services, you can use tap water for food preparation, direct consumption and toilet without any problems. In some rural areas and small towns get the liquid may be difficult in these places must purchase water at points where it is treated or buy bottled water.
